UAV High Energy Laser Railroad Weapon

August 29th, 2008

The newest high-energy laser weapons are way cool and they are available for ground based units or mobile ground based units like the THEL or even Airborne Units which are mounted in a 747 Jumbo Jet. Sounds like Star Wars or Battle Star Galactica, indeed and it is exactly like that.

Now there is a new program to build one of these units, which is about the size of a refrigerator. This means we can build small High Energy Laser Units, which can be put into a fighter jet and used as the aircraft flies, just like the X-Wing Fighters attacking Darth Vader’s Death Star.

I propose we build these units and put them into UAVs or Unmanned Aerial Vehicles. Why do that you ask? Well if you are going to fight a nation they will have heavy air defenses and it does not makes sense to risk human pilots on the first wave as you work to take out major SAMs or Surface to Air Missile Sites.

Stealth high-energy laser UAVs can be used with weapons on top. When they are ready to fire they invert and fly upside down for a few seconds and then turn back over to become stealthy again. We can send these units in to attack and then use them to take out major infrastructure like railroads. Railroad tracks can easily be seen from above and would not need any Satellite guidance to help locate targets.

These units could be fully autonomous and raise havoc taking out all straight lines which are unnatural to the landscape; that is to say railroad tracks, large buildings, dams and major roads. Consider this in 2006.

Village Suffers Limited Broadband Connection

August 27th, 2008

Some residents who live on the outskirts of Ewhurst are either getting hardly any broadband coverage or non at all. In addition to residents, some local business, the Hurtwood House schools, and the Duke of Kent are suffering in like manner. This is basically due to the fact that the nearest telephone exchange is in Cranleigh, and this is the exchange from which all the cables originate. A local engineer in Ewhurst, Mr. Walter Wilcox, is spearheading a local campaign for improvements in the village’s broadband connections. He is even proposing to BT that residents of Peaslake Road and Moon Hall Road might be willing to chip in towards the cost. Something has to be done now, or they will be locked out of gaining access to next generation services. One solution might be to implement a way to have shorter connections. This resulted in a quote of £2,000 from BT, which compared to the industry rate of £200 a metre, is outrageous.

It is evident that there are existing problems. For instance, because most of the local telephone system is outdated, it is quite difficult to link homes in the outliers, to the latest in technology. Those in Cranleigh Road, Ewhurst have it bad, but not to be compared to others at the Peaslake Road and Holmbury Hill. They get absolutely nothing.

For now, it appears as if the only realistic solution is the installing of fibre cables in 3-4 new cabinets. Even with that in place, the speed delivered to outlying areas will still be slow. Mr. Wilcox is certain that the locals have to chip in, so that they can raise enough money to get BT open reach to give them an audience. He suggested that they incorporate a company: “Ewhurst Broadband Limited”. The company would be both an ISP and a charity, and will manage all funds raised locally.

The Revolution in Skin Care

August 24th, 2008

Q: With so many skin care products on the market today, how do you know which one is right for you?

A: I encourage you to become a label reader.

The latest trend in skin care marketing is anti-aging. Many women today are concerned about reversing the signs of aging as well as prevention of the aging process. With so many well known brand name products out there, it may be difficult to find the perfect most beneficial one for you. That is why I encourage you to be a label reader and know what you are putting in and on your body.

The difference between botanically based products and those that only contain botanical ingredients is simply in the recipe.
Botanicals can be added to a base of ingredients such as mineral oil, drying alcohols or animal by-products. In a base like that, your skin won’t benefit from the botanicals. You are paying for useless added ingredients that do not benefit your skin or health. For example 98% of cosmetic companies use some type of petrolatum by products, mineral oil, petrolatum or petroleum, in their products. Have you ever turned your products over and read “animal by products”? No, but the labels might say collagen, elastin and lanolin. Remember that the next time you lick your lips.

Furthermore, what you put on your body, you are essentially putting in your body. Don’t believe me? Put a piece of garlic between your toes, you will taste it in about fifteen minutes. Wouldn’t you like to be putting something on your body that aids in beauty as well as health? The ingredients are just a important as the effects.

There is hope, I have found a company with a Swiss formulated skin care line for the whole family*. These products are hypoallergenic and formulated without dyes, chemicals, or synthetic fragrances. They are also PH correct, which is part of their pure, safe and beneficial guarantee. It is not beneficial to use a product that makes you feel squeaky-clean because the PH of skin is 5.5 and we have an acid mantel that keeps down the bacterial infections. PH balanced is what most products advertise and that is about a 7, which is too drying for our skin. A lot of the clear soap that people use on their skin is actually a 14 on the ph scale, the same as perm solution.

I hope you come away from the article with a greater understanding of the importance of skin care and the products used to achieve healthy skin. At least, I hope you have become a label reader and are aware of what you are using and what you should be using.

Parenting Your Teenager: 7 Tips for Back to School Success

August 21st, 2008

Blink. That’s all we did, blink, and summer is ending and a new school year is beginning.

Parents have mixed emotions. Relief that the kids are going back and dread that another school year, and the battles that come with it, is right around the corner.

Here are tips for a successful school year for students and parents.

Tips for Students

Get a good start. If you start out behind, you dig a hole that you will spend the rest of the year digging out of, if at all.

Get a good finish. Even more important than getting a good start is getting a good finish. Keep doing the positive things you began the year and semester doing. Follow through and finish well.

Duck the personality conflicts. Sometime in your school life, you will run into a teacher with whom you do not get along. Instead of blaming your poor performance on “the teacher doesn’t like me,” take it as a challenge to learn how to succeed even when someone in authority does not like you. It’s good training for the real world.

Beat the procrastination monster - The next time you are tempted to procrastinate, just put it off. Procrastinate about procrastinating and do it now.

Tips for Parents

Promote a love of learning. At some level, most teens are very obedient, in that they will model and copy our behavior and attitudes, the good, the bad and the ugly. Do your kids ever see you reading? Learning something new? Discussing the issues of the day with them? If they get it that learning is held in high esteem in their family, it sets them up to value their own learning as well.

Go to your kid’s school. Walk through the halls between classes, walk through the cafeteria during lunch. You need to see that it is not like it was when we were kids.

Some parents find that the car is the best place for this conversation. You have a captive audience and are not staring at each other. Other parents have found that scheduling a 15-minute break during the week to talk about school works well for them.

Cold & Flu

August 16th, 2008

Flu
Influenza
Influenza (or as it is commonly known, the flu or the grippe) is a contagious disease, caused by an RNA virus of the orthomyxoviridae family. It rapidly spreads around the world in seasonal epidemics. The name comes from the old medical belief that unfavourable astrological influences cause the disease.

Types

There are three types of the virus, identified by antigenic differences in their nucleoprotein and matrix protein:

Influenza A viruses that infect mammals and birds

Influenza B viruses that infect only humans

Influenza C viruses that infect only humans

The A type of influenza virus is the type most likely to cause epidemics and pandemics. This is because the influenza A virus can undergo antigenic shift and present a new, immune target to susceptible people. Populations tend to have more resistance to influenza B and C, because they only undergo antigenic drift, and have more similarity with previous strains.

The term superflu is used to refer to a strain of flu that spreads unusually quickly, is unusually virulent, or is for which the host is uncommonly unresponsive to treatment. Thus, there is a tendency to apply the term to strains which cause epidemics or pandemics. There is no exact scientific definition of a superflu.

Symptoms

The virus attacks the respiratory tract, is transmitted from person to person by saliva droplets expelled by coughing, and causes the following symptoms:

Fever
Headache
Tiredness (can be extreme)
Dry cough
Sore throat
Nasal congestion
Sneezing
Irritated eyes
Body aches
Extreme coldness
Fatigue

Flu season
Influenza reaches peak prevalence in winter, and because the Northern and Southern Hemisphere have winter at different times of the year, there are actually two flu seasons each year. Hope-Simpson (1981) observed that influenza outbreaks are globally ubiquitous, and consistently occur six months following the time of maximum solar radiation in an area. Therefore, the World Health Organization makes two vaccine formulations every year; one for the Northern, and one for the Southern Hemisphere.

While most influenza outbreaks in the Northern Hemisphere tend to peak in January or February, not all do. For example, the influenza pandemic of 1918 and 1919 reached peak virulence during late spring and summer worldwide, and not until October in the US. It remains unclear why outbreaks of the flu occur seasonally rather than uniformly throughout the year. One possible explanation is that, because people are indoors more often during the winter, they are in close contact more often, and this is enough to trigger the outbreak. Another is that the cold weakens the immune system; however, the virus is contracted in a warm indoor environment in which it can thrive.

Prevention
It is possible to get vaccinated against influenza. However, due to the high mutability of the virus, a particular flu vaccine formulation usually only works for about a year. The World Health Organization co-ordinates the contents of the vaccine each year, to contain the most likely strains of the virus which probably will attack the next year. The flu vaccine is usually recommended for anyone in a high-risk group, who would be likely to suffer complications from influenza.

Treatment
Antiviral treatments that have proven effective in influenza are amantadine, rimantadine, zanamivir, oseltamivir and ribavirin. As most of these substances are expensive, various healthcare organisations and insurers only support their use where this would make a significant difference, e.g. in the elderly.

A trademarked elderberry extract may aid in shortening the duration of an episode of influenza once contracted, though it has no notable preventive effects (Zakay-Rones et al 1995).

Credit Reports: Find out why you have been refused Credit.

August 15th, 2008

You may already have 2 or more credit cards in your purse or wallet and you have just applied for a third and been declined. This can be very frustrating considering you pay off your other credit cards regularly and you are continually having your credit limit raised.

This is a common problem and the only way to find out more is by getting a copy of your Credit Report. Equifax and Experian are the two main credit reference companies in the UK and hold credit details of over 40 million people. Your file includes information about all your credit cards, loans, mortgages, bank account details, as well as any adverse bill payments or County Court Judgements against you.

When a Credit Provider asses your credit risk they will look at your Credit Report and make a decision based on your scoring. Your score is based on several factors. You may get more points for living in your address for more than 3 years or for having a home telephone, be married or for having children. Your age and profession can also help your score. The more points you have on your file the more chance you have of being approved for credit. The credit provider will use all this information coupled with your credit history to come to a decision. A Credit Providers scoring system is sensitive information so it’s not easy to understand why you were refused credit.

By having access to your Credit Report you will be able to get a sense of why you possibly have not been granted Credit. Another important point is to check and see that everything on your report is correct. You are allowed to make corrections to your file. As most people don’t get their Credit Report they never know what’s on it or why they are being refused credit. If you fell behind in some of your bill payments you are also allowed to add a note explaining why you did. This may also improve your score.

With all the 0% credit cards on offer its worth mentioning that if you are continuously applying for these cards you could be damaging your credit score. The number of times you apply within a 6 to 12 month period can have an adverse effect on your score. If you have been refused credit, don’t just move on to the next lender, find out as much as possible as to why it was declined before applying somewhere else.

You can find out more about your Credit Report at Experian and Equifax. It costs £2 for a basic report.
