How to Write a Screenplay: A Beautiful Mind (2001) Deconstructed

March 31st, 2009

From our deconstruction of hundreds of Hollywood blockbusters….

The Hero’s Journey is the template upon which the vast majority of successful stories and Hollywood blockbusters are based upon. In fact, ALL of the Hollywood movies we have deconstructed are based on this template.

Understanding this template is a priority for story or screenwriters.

The Hero’s Journey:

a) Attempts to tap into unconscious expectations the audience has regarding what a story is and how it should be told.

b) Gives the writer more structural elements than simply three or four acts, plot points, mid point and so on.

c) Interpreted metaphorically, laterally and symbolically, allows an infinite number of varied stories to be created.

and more…

7 Basic Headline Writing Tips That Can Lead To Fortunes!

March 29th, 2009

Headlines attract attention. Headlines generate interest. The time spent writing headlines can pay you back many times over.

Do you have a product or service to sell? How do you attract new customers, clients, prospects, leads or patients?

Most likely you attract them through the written word in some sort of advertising, articles, or press release. In each case you need a headline.

In fact, every printed document you publish should have a headline on it. Yes, even including your business card, if you have one!

So, what should go in your headline? Below are six headline ideas that have proved profitable in the past. Remember the goal of the headline is to stop your reader dead in their tracks and get them to read further in to your sales copy.

1). Answer the question, “What’s In It For Me?”

Offer the reader a big benefit or promise if they continue reading. Here are a few examples:

  • The Secret of Making People Like You
  • Who Else Wants A Screen Star Figure?
  • You Can Laugh At Money Worries - If You Follow This Simple Plan
  • How to Win Friends and Influence People
  • Discover The Fortune That Lies Hidden In Your Salary

The promise can be either explicit or implied, but it must be clear to the reader.

2). Tightly target your headlines.

Don’t write your headline to everyone. A headline written to everyone in reality is written to no one. Grab the attention of a very specific target audience by mentioning them by name. Here are some examples of tightly targeted headlines.

  • Debt Got You Down? You Can Laugh At Money Worries - If You Follow This Simple Plan!
  • To People Who Want To Write - But Can’t Get Started!
  • To Men Who Want TO Quit Work Someday!
  • For the Woman Who Is older Than She Looks!

5) Ask a question, especially one that can’t be answered by “yes” or “no.”

When a question can’t be answered by “yes” or “no” the reader will generally continue reading to discover the answer. The human mind hates to be left wondering about the answer to a question. Pose a question and the human mind will work to find an answer.

Character Motivation - Always Ask WHY

March 28th, 2009

For many years, I’ve been a tutor for students undertaking courses in writing romance, crime or children’s stories. In that time, I’ve marked thousands of assignments. I’ve seen hundreds of plots, thousands of scenes, millions of words. And if I had to give writers one piece of advice after seeing all those millions of words, it would be this: always ask ‘WHY?’

Why?

Because I’ve seen too many characters forced into ridiculous situations by a careless author. I’ve seen potentially good plots twisted completely out of shape - because the writer finds it easier to force characters to do dumb things than to sit down and come up with a stronger plot.

Believe me, you don’t want your readers scratching their heads in puzzlement and saying ‘But why would she do a stupid thing like that?’ or ‘As if anyone would say that at a time like this!’
Once readers start saying stuff like that, your book’s a goner.

Suddenly, the reader can’t believe in the character anymore. She’s become a puppet in the hands of the author. (’Oh,’ says Character, ‘You want me to agree to meet this guy I know is a psychopath in the middle of the night, in a deserted area of bushland? Without backup, without a weapon, and without letting anyone know where I’ve gone? Isn’t that a bit… well… stupid? Oh, I see, it’s necessary for the plot to work… Well, okay then.’)

Now come on. What would you do in this position?

  1. First, you would probably never in a million years agree to go anywhere to meet a known psychopath.

  2. If for some incomprehensible reason you did, you’d certainly leave messages with key people saying where you are going, who you are planning to meet, why you are going, when they should expect to hear from you again and what action they should take if they don’t.

And that leads us to the golden rule when you are planning action for one of your characters. First ask, ‘What would I do in this situation?’ Your common-sense response is probably what most people would do. Here’s a useful chart you can use to ask your characters WHY they’re doing or saying those things, while there’s still time to change it.

“Why” Questions That You Should Ask:

  • Is this an action consistent with her character?

  • Has he been programmed (through a lifetime’s habits or through some form of brainwashing) to act in this way?

  • Has she been driven beyond her normal limits? If so, how and why? Is this credible?

  • Is he thinking clearly? If not, why not? Is this reason believable?

  • Is there another option? If so, what? Would it be more logical for this character to take this option instead?

  • Self-preservation is a strong human instinct. Is your character doing everything he can to keep himself safe while taking this action?

  • Has the character had time to think? Would she have made a different decision if she had not had to decide on the spur of the moment?

  • If the action taken has obviously been a bad decision, can this character change plans? Will this help the plot?

  • What would you do in this situation? What would most people do?

  • Is this character responding to change in some way?

  • Is this a kneejerk reaction or a considered plan?

  • Is your character being heroic or being an idiot? Is she weighing up all the options?

DIALOGUE: Why Is My Character SAYING This?

  • Does her speech reflect her upbringing, ethics and/or her aspirations in life?

  • Is he responding emotionally without thinking things through?

  • Is she playing a role to get what she wants?

  • Is this a logical response or is it a case of the author manipulating the character for the sake of the plot?

  • Do the character’s words lead her into more trouble?

  • Do the character’s words buy him time to find out some information or give the cavalry time to get there?

  • Is she lying to get herself out of trouble?

  • Is he lying to protect someone else?

If you get in first to ask your characters ‘why?’, you are far less likely to have editors and readers ask the sort of ‘why’ questions that you won’t like - ‘Why should I buy a far-fetched plot like this one?’ or ‘Why would anyone want to keep reading this?’

Your Words Will Determine Your Business!

March 19th, 2009

Be careful when you write.

Words you use, sentences you phrase will reveal what you are.

We come across so many examples daily.

There are sales letters that I do not even bother to go beyond first few lines.

There are others which keep me hooked till the end.

What differentiates one from another?

-Use of the right language.

What is right language you might ask?

-It depends upon the occasion, I would say.

When you interact in the real world your facial gestures and voice modulation can to some extent compensate for the wrong selection of words though that too becomes difficult sometimes.

But internet is a faceless world.

Here your sole medium of communication is the written word. It is in your emails. It is in your sales letters. It is in your website, advertisements and not to speak of many other things.

So when you use wrong word on the net you will not be pardoned. Online business thrives on the written sentences. Whether they take a form of sales letter, a promotional article or communication with your potential customers, your writing will influence your business.

What you write forms a personality of its own. In language each word has a unique identity, a unique meaning. Further amalgamation of words into sentences forms a structure that may vary in the shape depending upon words chosen and how well they have been knit.

This whole process will differentiate a well built writing from a poor one.

This whole process will eventually distinguish an impact from a thud.

Yes! You should choose your words carefully and knit them diligently.

This is an ongoing process and can not be learnt in a day. But it can be learnt for sure.

First and foremost is writing with passion. Whether it is a sales letter or an email, when you get involved in the work you produce a better copy. Your mind works on a different level and your vocabulary is used to maximum.

Second is constant reading and increasing your vocabulary. Whenever you read something whether it is newspaper or a novel or anything you do come across new words. Note them down and look for exact meaning. Do not work by approximation to complete the reading. It might seem boring initially but it will end up forming a good habit and enrich your vocabulary.

Study the good works of successful people. Learn how they produce powerful statement using the same set of words. Note how everybody has a unique style that they can be identified with.

You too should develop your own style. No! Not a copy of someone but your own. Write as you comfortably write. Don’t imitate somebody in want of style. As you write naturally your style will take a shape.

Last but not the least, keep your grammar and spellings correct. Wrong grammar and spelling mistakes leave a very bad impression. It does not matter if your reader has a bad grammar but you will be judged by absolute standards.

Typos and grammatical mistakes are absolutely intolerable. Avoid them as you would avoid an allergic substance.

Follow these and you will have better hold on the language and better results in your business.

Your words are your weapon in this marketing arena. Make it sure that you possess the best ones and you are an expert user.

Orange Poised to Provide 20MB Broadband Service

March 18th, 2009

Orange is all set to launch its new 20MB high-speed service for its UK customers in the fixed line broadband segment. The company has taken a major step forward in the direction by launching the trials of the new service. The main purpose of these trials is to remove the faults, and improve the quality and reliability of the service to make it ready for a countrywide launch.

Orange has said that the price for the 20MB service will be the same as that of the existing 8MB one, which will add to the cheer of the customers. Although, the exact date for the public release is yet to be announced, it is anticipated that the existing users of services from Orange will be able to get access to the 20MB connection by the end of the year. For more info on broadband, take a look at Broadband Genie.

Asif Aziz, Orange UK’s Director for Home and Broadband believes that these trials are essential to ensure that the company lives up to its commitment of offering the best to the users. He added that the new service would give a much-improved experience to the users, who will be able to use their broadband connection at superfast speeds with added reliability.

As of now, only a limited number of people have access to the new service, and they will be acting as testers of the service. A microsite has been developed by the company to ensure that its experts are in constant touch with the testers, as it helps the company interact with them and get valuable feedback.

Zimmer Durom Cup Lawsuits Is Terrible News

March 18th, 2009

Alot of people who got sulzer hip implants used in their hip cup replacement operations are witnessing that there are negative ramifications that far exceed the normal expectations for recovery. These implant recipients are experiencing a lot of needless pain for longer periods of time, facing revision surgical processes and enlarged medical costs, and losing revenue by not physically being able to work at their official jobs. Although Zimmer Holdings, Inc. is demanding that that their implant is not imperfect and not to be held accountable for the faulth cup hip implants, many implant recipients are filing cases against them and obtaining settlements.

During October, 2008 Zimmer declared that it had set aside $47.5 million to pay for claims they had filed against them and received. Many docs are not convinced that the hip implant is not faulty as the company has suggested. In Point Of Fact, when Zimmer tendered on-line education to physicians in order to instruct them what was supposedly more correct techniques for executing the implant operation, approximately half of the MD’s declined to participate. Hence, the whole situation continues to be irritating for all doctors participating, but none more than the hundreds of people who are facing revision surgical operation due to the problems with their implant experiencing looseness from the socket.

These suffering individuals definitely merit some assistance and restitution which obviously is why product liability lawyers are telling them to start the lawsuit process. zimmer durom cup hip implant has been paying out of court for some of these claims. Even So, even if the settlement they are being offered seems like it could be a air settlement, in most cases poor people are deciding too fast and without clause put in place for on-going problems if it happens again. If they don’t hold off and wait, to find out what an actual case is worth, people might find themselves paying thousands of dollars from their own pocket when further complications return.

For anyone who realizes they probably have a claim against Zimmer needs to start peering into it. If you think you may qualify, you should probably call a lawyer to be certain. Look for one that operates nationally and who has a main focus on litigation against faulty medical devices. This law firm has gone so far as to setup a special section to do the research and handle the claims against Zimmer and win substantial settlements for their clients.

If your orthopedic surgeon breaks the news that will have to have a revision operation to correct your Zimmer Durom hip replacement device, contact an lawyer right away.

In fact, if you plan to look online for your copy writer resources, you might as well just devote your life to reading! There are so many books that are available for you to purchase. Sure, there are standard things that each book will probably include. And, like the vast amount of diets out there, copywriter books are just as versatile and, unfortunately, misleading.

Now, before you get frustrated with that, let’s clarify that there are many thousands of different copywriter books available. Some do have very good points, business tips, and offer a great amount of help. But, let’s get realistic when it comes to the outrageous claims of making millions as a freelance copy writer just from reading a book. Like those fad diets, there are those that like to fluff the quality of their material incredibly. The key is to find the good stuff, pull it out, and use it wisely.

Let’s think about that analogy about diets claiming fantastic results again. We all know that tried and true diet of eating healthy, well balanced meals and getting in a good amount of exercise is going to result in weight loss, right? The same goes for these books claiming fantastic results. If you want a freelance career as a copy writer that makes you millions, you’ll need to work for it, from the beginning.

There is no easy way to make a career as a proof reader or copy writer unless you build strong, good relationships with your clients from the beginning. Sure, you can find copywriter books that can give you great tips on how to get out there, how to present yourself, and how to make your business work, but in the end, if your work is not of good quality, you can forget the whole thing. Do not be discouraged away from purchasing these books though. They can provide you with an outstanding amount of useful information. Just don’t set your goals so high that you can’t see the first step of the ladder!

What can a VoIP Phone System Do for a Small Business?

March 15th, 2009

Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP, is a term used to describe the transmission of telephone calls using a data network, rather than over traditional phone lines. It is a simple concept, but one that is having a very significant impact on the world of business communications.

VoIP is itself enabled by a much broader technological evolution, namely the convergence of multiple forms of communication, including voice, video and data, into a single network. This transformation is creating a revolution in the way communications works, and it has the potential to offer major benefits to your business. VoIP can help your company grow by broadening your communications capabilities, it can save you money on your telecommunications costs, and it can enable more productivity, mobility and flexibility in your workforce.

Many small businesses around the world are already benefiting from the advantages of VoIP systems, many of which are well suited to these kinds of organizations. Here are some examples of why VoIP is making a major impact on business communications for small businesses:

• VoIP provides the ability to use an integrated voice and data network at a lower cost than the separate parts.

• VoIP offers the small business communications capabilities on a par with the largest of companies.

• VoIP can open the door to new services and applications for the small business that can drive additional revenue and help cope with expansions in customer demand.

• VoIP can lead to increased employee productivity by giving employees a more flexible means of communicating and allowing more mobility, while increasing the flow of information.

There are different ways for small businesses to take advantage of the benefits of VoIP. An upgrade to an existing phone system, when available, can allow VoIP communications between different locations, without any major disruption to the infrastructure in each office. Alternatively, a new VoIP system can be purchased to replace an old phone switch and open up new capabilities. Yet another option is to pay monthly for a Service Provider to provide a hosted VoIP system, without buying any capital equipment at all.

Small businesses are often good candidates for VoIP systems, and have represented a majority of the early adopters of technology. While large companies have complex networks, with a multitude of different phone systems that can be difficult to integrate into a single converged network, small companies’ networks are more straightforward, allowing an easier transition to VoIP.

However, some small businesses have found that there are complexities or difficulties that get in the way of them maximizing the impact of the new technology. Lack of good advice, a misconceived plan or a deployment by inexperienced personnel can all led to problems.

The keys to a successful transition to a VoIP based network start with a clear understanding of the business case behind it and an implementation plan that best fits the company’s overall objectives.

There are certain circumstances, however, where VoIP is likely to have a more significant impact than others. If your company is in one or more of the following situations you will tend to get a faster payback:

• expanding and need or likely to need larger offices.

• have a significant percentage of employees that travel on business or work full-time or part-time from home, using laptops.

• making acquisitions and need to integrate with other business.

• have international offices.

• have a growing volume of incoming calls.

• have not replaced or upgraded their phone infrastructure in the last 5 years.

• have a good penetration of Ethernet cabling and have communications equipment that is less than 3 years old.

• operate in an industry with dynamic competition where strong customer service levels are essential.

Overall, VoIP based phone systems offer great potential for small companies and can help to keep costs under control while growing a successful business.
