Results of Survey by Consumer Website uSwitch Dismissed by TalkTalk

November 10th, 2009

According to a survey conducted by uSwitch, the average hold time per technical support call is 12 minutes for the service provider TalkTalk. The time spent on hold translates into huge money spent on phone charges. A conservative estimate is that it is £1.75 per call. This makes it a wastage worth millions of pounds on such calls.

Apart from this, the results show that of the approximately six million customers, six out of ten do not get satisfactory answers to their problems by calling technical support. It is not that TalkTalk alone has received flak for these results. Other broadband providers like Orange and Tiscali too have not been spared, as in the context of customer satisfaction, their ratings have been found to be quite poor.

TalkTalk has opposed these results, which it claims are unscientific. It claims to have more accurate and recent data (of September 2009) which was collected as part of the regular practice followed by the company. It has rubbished the uSwitch results by claiming that it is based on old data collected to measure the average hold time per call. The latest data provided by TalkTalk shows that the hold time for an average TalkTalk customer is only 53 seconds, which is way below the industry average.

TalkTalk in their statement has also expressed that they are not satisfied with their latest results and are constantly striving to improve their service.

3 Promises No Major Leaps in Speeds after 7.2Mb Upgrade

September 14th, 2009

In a major move to upgrade its network speed from the current 3.6Mbps to 7.2Mbps, 3 UK has advised its customers not to expect too much from the change in terms of actual speeds. Calling this upgrade as merely technical in nature, the company has clarified that this will not affect internet speeds of individual customers, and that its proposed 7.2Mbps should not be mistaken as the actual speed available for use. In fact, it has said the upgrade will only allow more customers to access the internet at a constant speed of 1 to 2 Mbps. It has added that users of the new 7.2Mbps service will have to be in areas with strong network signals and use a high speed dongle to benefit from the upgrade.

In the present age of stiff market competition where companies are trying to outplay one another by advertising sky-high wireless speeds, 3’s realistic and customer-oriented approach is certainly commendable. The provider states that it is more interested in ensuring that more people get access to the internet from their homes or offices instead of vying for higher speeds. According to the company, this upgrade promises to increase the number of internet users who will be able to perform basic activities like browsing and checking emails, but does not promise to support any application that requires greater bandwidth or higher internet speeds.

It is noteworthy that 3 is being very pragmatic in its approach regarding this new upgrade, even to the extent of underrating it by saying it will not bring about any marked improvements in speeds. When all other wireless internet service companies are boasting and lauding their efforts to deliver better speeds while not actually doing so, 3’s honest confessions may actually help the company win more customers than its rivals.

VoIP: A Favourable Solution To Business Communication

July 28th, 2009

Communication is an important part of business systems. Whether it is internal communication between the different functions of an organisation or external communication with the suppliers, partners and customers, the communication channel needs to be highly efficient and cost effective. Telecom revolution has brought a bag full of efficient and cost effective tools for communication and the latest addition to these is Voice over Internet Protocol or VoIP.

A VoIP is nothing but communication between two people over a high speed broadband connection as opposed to traditional telephone lines. The broadband connection needs to be of high speed for better voice quality and high cost-effectiveness. With the help of certain VoIP hardware as well as VoIP software one can make a phone call using VoIP.

Let’s look at the benefits of having a VoIP system in an organisation:-

Cost effective: - A VoIP call cuts down your telephone bills to the range of 40 to 60 per cent. Depending upon your VoIP service provider and VoIP products you use, calls can also made free of cost to limited areas.

Inbuilt features: - Various inbuilt features like voicemail, call waiting, call routing; caller id etc gives it an edge over traditional phone lines.

Flexible: - The VoIP system is highly flexible which means that it can adjust well to your business needs. If you need more lines you can upgrade your system at low cost and vice versa.

Easy to use: - A VoIP system is highly user friendly and is very easy to use.

• Organisations which want better management of their voice and data traffic.

• Organisations interested in or have customer support services.

The Three Most Popular Technologies that Are Used in HDTV Televisions

June 21st, 2009

IF you have thought about getting rid of your old conventional tv set and move to the wonderful world of HDTV televisions you may find that there are many types of screens. Every type of screen has its own pros and cons when it comes to image quality, motion and color projection. In fact, the differences between screen types are so noticeable that people that are HDTV savvy can easily distinguish from an LCD and a Plasma set without having to look at product specifications. So which one is the best one for you? That question can only be answered by you. In this article you will learn about the pros and cons of different technologies that are used when manufacturing HDTV televisions.

One of the most know technologies is Plasma. HDTV televisions with Plasma screens were very abundant during the first years of high definition tv. Plasma screens project warm beautiful colors and dark blacks. When it comes to tv sets, dark blacks translate into higher contrast and more sense of depth inside the image. They also have very fast refresh rates. Older models had a short lifespan and were prone to image burn in. In a sense, Plasma HDTV televisions have the better image quality than most HDTVs but they are heavy and can suffer from burn in if some precautions are not taken. They also require more energy to operate.

LCD HDTV televisions on their part are lighter. They are more energy efficient. When it comes to image quality, colors on LCD sets are very bright. When it comes to blacks, these Tvs do not have the solid dark blacks that Plasma sets have. Although, in recent times manufacturers have worked very hard to create models that can display dark blacks to help enhance the quality of the image. Some sets have a slow refresh rate that leads to image ghosting on fast moving scenes. Overall, LCD sets have a long lifespan and have a lower price than Plasma if you are looking for smaller sets. Be sure to read reviews since the performance of these high definition tvs varies from model to model.

There is another HDTV technology that goes by the name of DLP. DLPs are very cost effective compared to the other ones. Usually DLP technology is used to manufacture huge rear projectors. When it comes to image quality, this technology has lower image quality than the two mentioned above. There have been complaints about a rainbow effect that not all people but some are able to detect on images that are being created by a DLP projector. Some people have reported feeling dizzy after watching television on them.

There are more HDTV technologies available on the market. However these three technologies are the ones that dominate the market. Even with these more modern projection technologies the one that had the best image quality of all, and that is no longer manufactured for HDTV televisions was CRT, the same one that powered conventional television sets.

Motorrad Navigator II GPS Navigation System

May 26th, 2009

Owners of BMW motorcycles have a new technology available to them to provide up to the minute directions and navigation throughout all of Europe. BMW’s latest GPS unit for their motorcycles is a huge step up from their previous model. This model features an upgraded memory chip, up to 2 GB from 512 MB. The model also comes with a road map covering all of Eastern Europe installed right out of the box. This is a great feature because prior to this model you would have to take the unit to your pc and download the appropriate maps onto the unit. With this model you simple have to mount the unit to your motorcycle and attach the battery cable and you are ready to take off on the road.

Riders will find the new touch screen a vast improvement over the previous model and it has been retuned for easier use with gloved hands. The unit has been rated for use in snow and in rain, and against extreme heat and cold. The units increased memory and processors allow for virtually instantaneous updates of information and position. As with the previous model it still provides the rider with elapsed time, estimated time to destination, current speed, average speed and top speed. This models positioning is extremely accurate as it pulls information from twelve different satellites when coordinating your position. Most GPS units only use the information of four satellites and this gives the BMW model a greater advantage at calculating your exact position on the globe.

As for drivers or riders of non-BMW bikes, this unit can be used with any vehicle or motorcycle and will require minimal mounting and wiring. For an automobile it comes equipped with a cigarette lighter plug and can be mounted fairly easily to most vehicles. Pedestrians can also use this unit with its battery powered option. This product is available at all BMW dealerships and online at the BMW website.

Orange Poised to Provide 20MB Broadband Service

March 18th, 2009

Orange is all set to launch its new 20MB high-speed service for its UK customers in the fixed line broadband segment. The company has taken a major step forward in the direction by launching the trials of the new service. The main purpose of these trials is to remove the faults, and improve the quality and reliability of the service to make it ready for a countrywide launch.

Orange has said that the price for the 20MB service will be the same as that of the existing 8MB one, which will add to the cheer of the customers. Although, the exact date for the public release is yet to be announced, it is anticipated that the existing users of services from Orange will be able to get access to the 20MB connection by the end of the year. For more info on broadband, take a look at Broadband Genie.

Asif Aziz, Orange UK’s Director for Home and Broadband believes that these trials are essential to ensure that the company lives up to its commitment of offering the best to the users. He added that the new service would give a much-improved experience to the users, who will be able to use their broadband connection at superfast speeds with added reliability.

As of now, only a limited number of people have access to the new service, and they will be acting as testers of the service. A microsite has been developed by the company to ensure that its experts are in constant touch with the testers, as it helps the company interact with them and get valuable feedback.

What can a VoIP Phone System Do for a Small Business?

March 15th, 2009

Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP, is a term used to describe the transmission of telephone calls using a data network, rather than over traditional phone lines. It is a simple concept, but one that is having a very significant impact on the world of business communications.

VoIP is itself enabled by a much broader technological evolution, namely the convergence of multiple forms of communication, including voice, video and data, into a single network. This transformation is creating a revolution in the way communications works, and it has the potential to offer major benefits to your business. VoIP can help your company grow by broadening your communications capabilities, it can save you money on your telecommunications costs, and it can enable more productivity, mobility and flexibility in your workforce.

Many small businesses around the world are already benefiting from the advantages of VoIP systems, many of which are well suited to these kinds of organizations. Here are some examples of why VoIP is making a major impact on business communications for small businesses:

• VoIP provides the ability to use an integrated voice and data network at a lower cost than the separate parts.

• VoIP offers the small business communications capabilities on a par with the largest of companies.

• VoIP can open the door to new services and applications for the small business that can drive additional revenue and help cope with expansions in customer demand.

• VoIP can lead to increased employee productivity by giving employees a more flexible means of communicating and allowing more mobility, while increasing the flow of information.

There are different ways for small businesses to take advantage of the benefits of VoIP. An upgrade to an existing phone system, when available, can allow VoIP communications between different locations, without any major disruption to the infrastructure in each office. Alternatively, a new VoIP system can be purchased to replace an old phone switch and open up new capabilities. Yet another option is to pay monthly for a Service Provider to provide a hosted VoIP system, without buying any capital equipment at all.

Small businesses are often good candidates for VoIP systems, and have represented a majority of the early adopters of technology. While large companies have complex networks, with a multitude of different phone systems that can be difficult to integrate into a single converged network, small companies’ networks are more straightforward, allowing an easier transition to VoIP.

However, some small businesses have found that there are complexities or difficulties that get in the way of them maximizing the impact of the new technology. Lack of good advice, a misconceived plan or a deployment by inexperienced personnel can all led to problems.

The keys to a successful transition to a VoIP based network start with a clear understanding of the business case behind it and an implementation plan that best fits the company’s overall objectives.

There are certain circumstances, however, where VoIP is likely to have a more significant impact than others. If your company is in one or more of the following situations you will tend to get a faster payback:

• expanding and need or likely to need larger offices.

• have a significant percentage of employees that travel on business or work full-time or part-time from home, using laptops.

• making acquisitions and need to integrate with other business.

• have international offices.

• have a growing volume of incoming calls.

• have not replaced or upgraded their phone infrastructure in the last 5 years.

• have a good penetration of Ethernet cabling and have communications equipment that is less than 3 years old.

• operate in an industry with dynamic competition where strong customer service levels are essential.

Overall, VoIP based phone systems offer great potential for small companies and can help to keep costs under control while growing a successful business.
